Rummage For God
I love this phrase that Pete Grieg uses in his book ‘How to Pray’. He suggests that at the end of each day we take a few minutes to look back over all that has happened and ‘rummage for God’. He has been with us throughout the day but have we noticed Him? Can we look back and see the moments He has been at work. Perhaps we’ve known His presence, or sensed His peace, or experienced the joy of coincidentally (or perhaps God-incidentally) bumping into friends while out for a walk.
Richard and I have been out for a walk together every day after work throughout lockdown. I think we have only missed a couple of days since lockdown began! Something that has really blessed us has been bumping into people while out on our walks. We’ve met so many different people each day and been able to enjoy a quick chat. It makes such a difference to me to see people physically, it really lifts my spirit and I can see God’s hand in many of our encounters. I thought I would share a couple of them.
One evening Richard and I went out at 8pm which was much later than we usually go and we took a slightly different route. About half way through we bumped into a family we haven’t seen physically for a long time. It felt like a significant and God-given encounter. They have hardly been out at all and yet just as we walked down their road they appeared! Our 10-minute conversation was certainly a blessing to us and I think it was to them too.
Another day I felt a nudge from God to get in touch with a Mum I know who had been through a very difficult season, but I’m sorry to say the events of the day took over and I forgot. Then later that same day when Richard and I were out on our walk we bumped into her! I may have forgotten but God had not and He wanted us to meet and talk.
Both of these were reminders to me that God is very much part of our day working with us and through us.
Can I encourage you to ‘rummage for God’ each day and I’d love to hear your stories of the ‘God-incidences’ in your life.
Psalm 40: 5 (Passion Translation)
‘O Lord, our God, no one can compare with you.
Such wonderful works and miracles are all found with you!
And you think of us all the time
With your countless expressions of love –
Far exceeding our expectation!’
God bless you
