Putting God First
Putting God first is something I am not always very good at; life gets busy and the day can fly by with the list of things I have to do and God doesn’t always feature on the list. I try each morning to spend time with God and read the ‘Bible In One Year’. I would be lying if I told you that I do this consistently. Sometimes God isn’t my first priority.
I don’t want you to go through this blog feeling guilty if like me sometimes you struggle to even spend a moment with God. But God just really wants you to spend time with him.
This week I was reminded of the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10: 38- 42 we read “38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
In this moment we see that Martha has got busy sorting everything else around her. Jesus is there in the room and she priorities housework over Jesus. I know some of you reading this have even busier lives than I have; you are juggling work, children and running a house.
Reflecting on this, over the last few weeks I have felt like Martha. I have busied myself with everything else around me and put my time with God second.
“We fit Jesus into our priorities rather than putting him first, at the centre of everything we do. But when we seek his kingdom first, he doesn’t forget our needs? or deny them or ignore them. God provides for each one” (Christine Caine)
The key thing is to put Jesus first. This week be more like Mary instead of Martha.
This week put God first. This will look different for you than it does for me but spend whatever moment you can making God your priority.
When the kids have gone to bed read the bible, it doesn’t have to be a whole book, or a chapter, start with something manageable for you, spend some time listening to a worship song or praying.
The days I put God first I notice a massive difference in my mindset and how the day goes.
These are some apps I find helpful when I am tired and don’t know what to pray.
